Condensation, Black Spot Mould and what to do about it

September marked the start of condensation season, which comes to an end in May. During these months, as the external temperature drops, moisture inside your property will come to rest on cold surfaces and condensate into liquid. Ceilings, walls and windows may be affected. Sure enough, as the days shorten, I’ve started to notice a difference, with my windows looking a little bit wet.

The problem is that this excess moisture encourages Black Spot Mould (also known as Aspergillus Niger) to grow, appearing as clusters of tiny black spots, the size of a pinhead. To help control the levels of moisture in your property and keep condensation at bay, you need to find the right balance between heat and ventilation, which can be hard in less thermally efficient properties.

With the rise in gas prices, I wonder if we’ll see more cases of mould growth, as people may delay turning on their heating.

Improving heating, ventilation and the thermal efficiency of your property are the best way to tackle condensation issues - removing moist air and keeping your surfaces warm!
